Serving Alaska’s Finest Fisheries

Adak Island is home to a wealth of fish and shellfish including golden king crab, Tanner crab, weathervane scallops, Dungeness crab, Pacific cod, flatfish, sablefish, Pacific salmon, and Pacific herring. Many commercial fishing vessels of all class sizes sail these waters year-round and process their harvests here in the Aleutian Islands.

The Aleut Corporation (TAC) owns a large warehouse on Adak Island that is ideally situated for fisheries. Aleut Fisheries manages the warehouse for TAC and rents it on a seasonal basis to various fisheries. Cod, halibut and golden king crab are the primary seafoods that are processed in Adak’s fishery warehouse.

North Pacific Fisheries Management Council

In addition to managing the fishery warehouse, Aleut Fisheries is a member of the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council (NPFMC). The NPFMC gives fishery managers the flexibility to use local level input to develop management strategies appropriate for each region’s unique challenges and opportunities. The strategies and fishery management plans developed by NPFMC are used to help:

  • Set annual catch limits based on current science
  • Put accountability measures in place
  • Develop research priorities with scientists, stakeholders and industry partners
  • Uphold the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA), which prevents overfishing and balances resource conservation with optimum yields for fisheries
